Acne Consultation

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions worldwide, affecting an estimated up to 85% of people at some stage of their lives. While it's often associated with the teenage years, acne can develop at almost any age, from childhood and adolescence through to adulthood, pregnancy and menopause.

Acne isn't caused by poor hygiene, and there is rarely a single cause. Hormones, genetics, inflammation, excess oil production and changes within the hair follicle can all contribute. The encouraging news is that, for most people, acne can be effectively managed with an accurate diagnosis and an individualised treatment plan.

Our Acne Consultation is a dedicated appointment with a Nurse Practitioner designed to understand what may be contributing to your breakouts and develop a personalised management plan. For many patients, prescription skincare forms the foundation of treatment, with formulations tailored to your skin, acne severity and treatment goals.

What is an Acne Consultation?

This is a comprehensive consultation focused entirely on acne.

During your appointment we take time to understand not only your skin, but also the factors that may be influencing it. Your consultation includes:

  • Comprehensive medical and skin assessment

  • VISIA® skin analysis and clinical photography

  • Discussion of possible contributing factors, including hormonal influences, family history, medications, skincare routine and lifestyle

  • Personalised treatment recommendations

  • Prescription skincare where clinically appropriate

  • Education on building a sustainable skincare routine and maintaining long-term skin health

No GP referral is required. Medicare rebates may be available for eligible consultations.

Who may benefit?

An Acne Consultation may be suitable for people experiencing:

  • Persistent or recurring breakouts

  • Blackheads or whiteheads

  • Inflamed pimples or deeper cystic acne

  • Adult-onset acne

  • Hormonal breakouts

  • Acne that has not responded to over-the-counter products

  • Early acne scarring or concerns about preventing future scarring

Acne affects children, teenagers and adults of all genders. Suitability for treatment is determined during your consultation.

Why early treatment matters

Although acne is common, it shouldn't simply be accepted as something you have to live with.

Early assessment may help reduce the risk of ongoing inflammation, post-inflammatory pigmentation and acne scarring. The earlier appropriate treatment begins, the greater the opportunity to support long-term skin health.

Our approach

Every person's acne is different.

Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, we tailor recommendations to your skin, medical history and goals.

Many patients achieve improvements using personalised compounded skincare, which may include ingredients that target excess oil production, blocked pores, inflammation and pigment changes. Where appropriate, we may also discuss procedural treatments as part of a broader management plan.

Your treatment recommendations will always be individualised and based on a comprehensive clinical assessment.

Consultation Fees

Initial Comprehensive Acne Consultation (60 minutes): $110

Review Consultation (30 minutes): $80

Telehealth Follow up Consultation (20 minutes): $50

Medicare rebates may be available for eligible patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is acne caused by poor hygiene?

No. Acne develops through a combination of factors including hormones, genetics, inflammation and changes within the hair follicle. Washing your face more frequently does not treat acne and can sometimes make sensitive skin more irritated.

Can adults get acne?

Yes. Acne commonly affects adults in their 20s, 30s and beyond. Some people continue to experience acne from adolescence, while others develop it for the first time as adults.

Is prescription skincare effective?

For many people, personalised prescription skincare is a highly effective way to manage acne. Treatment plans are tailored to your skin and may be adjusted over time depending on your response. Your Nurse Practitioner will discuss whether prescription treatment is appropriate for you.

Will I need tablets?

Not necessarily. Many patients can be successfully managed with prescription topical treatments and an evidence-based skincare routine. If oral medication is appropriate, this will be discussed during your consultation.

How long does treatment take?

Acne treatment requires consistency and patience. Many prescription treatments take several weeks before improvement becomes noticeable, with continued improvement over several months. Your practitioner will monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan where appropriate.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with our Nurse Practitioner. Medicare rebates may be available for eligible consultations.

What can I expect?

Your consultation is designed to help you understand your skin and develop an individualised management plan. While many people experience significant improvement with appropriate treatment, responses vary between individuals and outcomes cannot be guaranteed.

Treatment recommendations are provided following an individual consultation and assessment. Medications are only recommended where clinically appropriate. Individual results vary.
