Hair loss and scalp consultations in Kingscliff
When to seek advice
A consultation may be helpful if you have noticed:
Increased or persistent shedding.
Gradual thinning or a change in your part or hairline.
Patches of hair loss.
Scalp itching, flaking or discomfort.
Changes in your hair following illness or other changes in your health.
Different causes can occur together. Assessment helps distinguish between shedding, changes in hair growth and conditions affecting the scalp.
What happens at your initial consultation?
Your Nurse Practitioner will discuss when the changes began, how they have progressed and any associated symptoms.
We review your medical history, medicines, family history, haircare practices and relevant changes in your health. Examination of your hair and scalp helps guide whether further investigation or specialist assessment is needed.
Bring any relevant recent test results and a list of medicines and supplements. Previous photographs can help show changes over time.
Are tests always needed?
Not everyone needs blood tests or additional investigations. These are considered according to your history and examination findings.
Some conditions require assessment by a dermatologist. We will explain when referral is appropriate and how it fits into your care.
Your care plan
We discuss the likely explanation for your symptoms along with appropriate treatment recomendations including in clinic treatments along with prescription and home care. Recommendations are based on the assessment, rather than starting with a predetermined procedure or treatment package.
You will have the opportunity to discuss expected benefits, limitations, costs and follow-up before deciding how to proceed.
PRP, PRF and exosmart®: understanding some of the Treatment options
These approaches involve collecting and processing a sample of your own blood. They differ in how the sample is prepared, and the evidence supporting their use is not interchangeable.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) concentrates platelets within plasma and is administered into the scalp. Research suggests it may improve hair density in some people with pattern hair loss, although responses vary and treatment protocols often require 2-3 initial sessions with 6 monthly follow ups.
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) uses a different preparation method involving the formation of a fibrin network. Evidence for its use in hair loss is still developing, and it also requires 2-3 initial sessions with 6 monthly follow ups.
exosmart® uses an additional filtration process to further concentrate components of your blood plasma. Evidence specific to its effectiveness for hair loss is still developing with initial outcomes exceeding expectations in most cases. This greater concentration means out treatment plans involve a single treatment protocols with scheduled reviews and possible retreat at 9 months.
These procedures do not address every cause of hair loss. Assessment comes first, with discussion of alternatives, evidence, costs and risks—including discomfort, bruising, bleeding and infection—before deciding whether a procedure is appropriate.
Reviewing progress
Hair changes take time to assess. Follow-up may involve comparison photographs, review of scalp symptoms and discussion of how your concerns are progressing.
Outcomes depend on the cause of hair loss and individual circumstances. Regrowth cannot be guaranteed.
Noticing more shedding, a widening part or changes in your scalp can feel unsettling. Hair loss has many possible causes, and understanding the pattern and your medical history helps guide the next steps.
At The Derm Clinic, we take an assessment-led approach to hair and scalp concerns.
When should I seek an earlier assessment?
Sudden or rapidly progressing hair loss, particularly with scalp pain, inflammation or patches of loss, deserves timely medical assessment. Some inflammatory scalp conditions can cause permanent hair loss if not recognised and managed.
