Pigmentation and Melasma Consultations

Uneven skin tone, persistent dark patches and marks left after breakouts can have different causes. Understanding the type of pigmentation is an important first step in deciding how to care for it.

At The Derm Clinic, Kingscliff we assess your concerns, explain our findings and discuss an individual approach to management..

Understanding pigmentation

Pigmentation concerns may include melasma, sun-related changes and marks that remain after inflammation or irritation.

Melasma commonly appears as patches of darker pigmentation on the face. Sun exposure and hormonal factors can contribute, and pigmentation may return even after it has improved.

These concerns do not all respond to the same approach. A product or procedure suitable for one type of pigmentation may be unsuitable for another.

What happens at your consultation?

Your Nurse Practitioner will examine your skin and discuss when the pigmentation appeared, how it has changed and any previous treatments.

We review your medical history, skincare routine, sun exposure and relevant hormonal changes. Clinical imaging with a VISIA analyisis to support assessment and establish a baseline for review.

Please tell us if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy, as this can affect your care options.

Telehealth consultations are also available if looking to commence The PRESCRIBED skincare treatments.

Personalised care planning

Your plan begins with an explanation of the likely cause and what may realistically be addressed. We discuss appropriate options, potential irritation, expected timeframes and any need for further assessment.

Sun protection and a routine your skin tolerates are important parts of ongoing care. Procedures are not automatically the right starting point, particularly when skin is irritated or prone to further pigmentation.

What can I expect over time?

Pigmentation management often requires patience and ongoing care. Melasma treatments require maintenance and will be discussed in your consultation.

Follow-up appointments allow us to review changes, assess how your skin is tolerating the plan and discuss whether adjustments are needed.

Tracking progress, objectively.

VISIA® Skin Analysis allows us to capture and compare detailed clinical images over time, helping us objectively assess changes in pigmentation and overall skin quality.

Shown: 6-week follow-up demonstrating improvement in pigmentation.

Individual results vary.

What about a new or changing spot?

A new, changing, bleeding or otherwise concerning spot needs assessment by a skin cancer specialist. The Derm Clinic does not provide skin cancer screening. Please arrange assessment with your GP, skin cancer clinic or dermatologist for these concerns.
